We can repeat the same patterns for years without ever really asking why they’re happening. And I’ve started wondering how much of what I’ve called “who I am” over the years was actually something I learned. Whether it be from parents, teachers, relationships, experiences. Moments that taught me something about myself or the world around me. Sometimes those lessons were useful. Sometimes I probably interpreted them completely wrong. But repeat something long enough and eventually it can stop feeling like a belief or a pattern. It starts feeling like truth. “Everything has to be hard.” “I’m not enough.” “I have to earn my worth.” “If I slow down, I’m falling behind.” And when you never question the belief underneath the pattern, it’s easy to keep recreating different versions of the same thing. I don’t think willpower alone changes that. And I don’t think awareness magically fixes it either. But awareness gives you the opportunity to finally question it. Where did this come from? Is it actually true? Is it still serving me? And if it isn’t…what would it look like to practice something different? Because recognizing the pattern is only the beginning. Then comes the uncomfortable part: choosing differently enough times that something new eventually becomes familiar.
