Tip 1: Keep asking “why?” Do not stop at knowing that something happens. Ask yourself why it happens, what caused it, what happens next, and what would change if one part of the process stopped working. The more “why” questions I ask, the easier it becomes to connect concepts instead of storing everything as random facts. Tip 2: Answer the question completely before looking at the answer choices. When I read a practice question, I try to pause and determine what I believe the answer should be before allowing the choices to influence me. What mechanism explains the patient’s presentation? What answer would I give if this were an open-ended question? Then I look at the choices and select the option that best matches my reasoning. This helps prevent me from choosing an answer simply because it sounds familiar or contains a word I remember seeing in the lecture. Tip 3: Connect what you are learning to actions in your everyday life. I try to turn normal daily activities into opportunities to review physiology and pharmacology. During a workout, I may think about sympathetic activation, cardiac output, oxygen consumption, ventilation, lactate production, or blood flow to exercising muscles. Connecting school material to normal life makes the information feel less abstract and helps me review without always sitting at a desk. Tip 4: Teach the concepts to coworkers, classmates, friends, or family. One of the best ways to discover whether I truly understand something is to try to explain it out loud. When you teach a concept, you quickly realize which parts you understand and which parts you have only memorized. If I cannot explain something clearly without using complicated language, I probably need to review it again. My goal is no longer to simply recognize the correct answer. I want to understand the concept well enough to explain the mechanism, predict what happens next, and apply it to a patient.
