There’s nothing wrong with explaining yourself. The problem is when the explanation comes before the accountability. When someone spends ten minutes telling you why they did it before they acknowledge how it affected you, it can feel less like they’re trying to understand your pain and more like they’re trying to avoid responsibility. Emotionally intelligent people understand the order matters. First: “I’m sorry. I can see how that hurt you.” Then, if it’s helpful: “Can I explain what was going through my mind?” One prioritizes repairing the relationship. The other prioritizes protecting your ego. I don’t expect perfection from the people in my life. I expect ownership. Comment EQ if you want my Emotional Intelligence Playbook. #emotionalintelligence #healthyrelationship #selfrespect
