There is a difference between accountability and compulsive moral policing. Some people cannot tolerate a hurting parent receiving even one ounce of empathy without immediately trying to redirect the conversation back into blame, confession, or punishment. At some point we have to ask why comforting someone has become so threatening online. Social media is creating environments where people feel pressure to constantly prove they are on the “right” side morally, even in deeply complicated family situations.
