The selects method behind two consecutive editing Oscars. Kirk Baxter has his assistants cut dailies into sequences back to front. If there are twelve takes he watches the twelfth first and works backwards. Forward, he says, you keep saying that one is good and so is that one. Backwards you watch it deteriorate and end up with a more focused selection. He pairs it with pre-chopping. Every take is broken at the same points, so each beat's variants play consecutively.
