The GNU operating system, whose name is a recursive acronym standing for "GNU's Not Unix!", is a comprehensive, free software operating system that is architecturally compatible with Unix. Initiated by Richard Stallman in 1983, the GNU Project was launched with the philosophical and practical goal of giving computer users complete freedom and control over their computing environments. Stallman was deeply motivated by the increasing commercialization of software in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which brought restrictive licenses that prevented users from sharing, modifying, and understanding the code they relied on. By designing an operating system that was entirely composed of free software, the GNU Project sought to establish a cooperative community where users were free to help themselves and each other. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, GNU developers and volunteers successfully created almost all the necessary components of a complete operating system. This included vital system tools such as the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), the GNU Debugger (GDB), the GNU Emacs text editor, the Bash shell, and a vast array of core system utilities and libraries that handle basic computing tasks. However, the project faced a significant hurdle in developing its own operating system kernel, called GNU Hurd. Designed with an ambitious microkernel architecture, the Hurd proved exceptionally difficult and time-consuming to stabilize, leaving the GNU system temporarily incomplete. This missing piece of the operating system was ultimately supplied from an external source in 1991, when a Finnish university student named Linus Torvalds developed a free, independent kernel called Linux. When the existing GNU system utilities and development tools were combined with the Linux kernel, a completely functional, entirely free operating system was formed. While this combination is frequently referred to popularly simply as "Linux," the Free Software Foundation and GNU proponents emphasize that the correct term is GNU/Linux, properly acknowledging both the essential kernel and the extensive system software suite that fulfills the GNU vision. Today, the impact of GNU extends far beyond its original code. The tools and philosophy born from the project laid the foundational infrastructure for modern web servers, cloud computing, supercomputers, and an immense ecosystem of open-source software.
