Specific learning disability does not mean a child cannot learn. It means the child may need specially designed instruction, targeted support, and the right evaluations to identify where the breakdown is happening. Under IDEA, SLD can impact areas like reading, writing, listening comprehension, oral expression, math calculation, and math problem-solving. And here’s the part parents need to know: A school does not have to use the exact labels dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia for a child to qualify under SLD, but the child’s needs still must be evaluated, identified, and addressed in the IEP. The label matters less than this question: What skill area is impacted, and what is the school doing about it? Know More.
