Sometimes labour doesn’t need more intervention. Sometimes it needs more space. ✨ One of my favourite labour position combos is: 1️⃣ Forward-leaning inversion This can help create a tiny bit of space in the pelvis and soft tissues, giving baby the chance to subtly readjust their head position. Not because baby is “wrong” — but because birth is a moving, rotating, beautifully clever process. 2️⃣ The “dilation station” Aka straddling the toilet backwards like a birth stool. Once baby has had a little opportunity to reposition, sitting on the toilet can help encourage: ✨ better descent ✨ downward pressure ✨ pelvic opening ✨ relaxation of the pelvic floor ✨ a stronger urge to release, soften and let baby move down The toilet is basically the underrated MVP of labour. Glamorous? No. Effective? Often, yes. And here’s the important bit: A pause in labour doesn’t always mean something is wrong. It doesn’t always mean you need a vaginal examination. It doesn’t always mean you need your waters broken, a drip started, or a plan changed immediately. Sometimes your body and baby just need time, privacy, movement, gravity, and the right position at the right moment. Of course, there are times when assessment and intervention are absolutely needed — but they should be offered with clear explanation, consent, and genuine individualised care. Birth isn’t just about dilation. It’s about position, rotation, descent, softness, safety, and trust. Save this for labour prep, and send it to your birth partner so they know what to suggest when things feel like they’ve slowed down. #labourpositions #birthprep #physiologicalbirth #positivebirth #midwife
