Save this if you’re learning māori patterns. when i first started learning kōwhaiwhai and how to draw māori patterns, i used existing work as reference. One thing that helped me the most was learning how to identify the manawa line. Once you can see that, you start to realise most kōwhaiwhai are built from a single element that’s repeated, rotated, or flipped. it might take a bit of time for it to click, but i’ll do my best to guide you through it. i’m still learning myself how to read kōwhaiwhai and find the structure within it, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t quite see it yet. we’re all learning this in our own way, and that’s part of the process. follow along for part three, where we’ll turn this into a carved piece.
