Replying to @𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒏👑 good question- long answer sorry! (Transcript here because captions aren’t working- @Chaterien: Thank you for your question- it’s a good question! I wish I had a good short answer but I don’t- but my real answer- 1) I work in research, my focus is disability, dementia, accessibility, housing, different things and I hate when researchers say, or scientists say- “I tried to be accessible, ask people what they think but it’s hard”. Really? What did you try? “I sent out emails in English, I presented in English…” ok so how are you being accessible for people with a learning disability, for Deaf people, for people living with dementia, blind people whatever. “Well I tried English!” Not enough. If you work on Disability it’s not enough, try harder! That’s my first reason. Second reason, I believe my work is good. But a lot of the problems I research and focus on with work I can’t fix. I can’t improve accessibility for all houses. I can’t make people see people living with dementia as full people- always. I can’t do that. But I can maybe help 1, 2, 3 people access the university, or access research after it is finished, or access’s research for an interview to share their voice. And that’s important for me, I want that for my work. 3, my friend is deaf/hard of hearing and I want to communicate better with them. Before, I worked in autism support and learned makaton, that was good and helpful but I felt icky because I was wondering why we would use American sign and not support communication with deaf people using easy BSL signs, and then them making money with it… so I prefer learning BSL. Those are my reasons. And I think it’s fun, it’s the first time my stupid face has been a good thing, now people say I’m doing brilliant, good facial expressions… but I have to say this is my face for real, always, but thank you! So I’m happy… I also think it’s important, I’m raging that lessons are so hard to access, so much money, not included in schools… but one thing at a time, level 3, and talking shit on the internet #bsl #bsl #academicsoftiktok
