MALCOLM X UNDERSTOOD THE ALGORITHM BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA EXISTED. Photographer Robert Haggins recalled that Malcolm closely studied how newspapers and photographs shaped public perception. The press repeatedly selected images that presented him as angry, dangerous, and less than fully human. Those photographs may have recorded real moments—but selection, repetition, cropping, and headlines transformed one expression into an entire public identity. Malcolm responded by helping build an alternative visual archive. Today, the newspaper editor has been joined by the algorithm.
