The Senate approved on third and final reading a bill seeking to extend the terms of barangay and SK officials from four to five years. In Cebu, authorities arrested alias “Billy,” the suspect in the fatal Banilad hit-and-run that killed 42-year-old BPO worker Jan Salise. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities pursue the appropriate charges. The week also brought tragic incidents involving children. Nine-year-old Michael Yuri Repaja died after being swept away by strong currents in a creek in Barangay Budlaan, while a two-year-old boy in Tisa died after allegedly suffering severe physical injuries. Authorities are continuing their respective investigations into both incidents. Other safety concerns emerged across Cebu, including a landslide and rockfall threat in Talisay, a major fire in Barangay Mambaling, and suspected African Swine Fever cases affecting hog raisers in Toong. Health officials also clarified that the measles-rubella vaccine was not directly linked to the death of a seven-month-old infant in Dumanjug. At the same time, the province continued to face challenges in increasing MR vaccination coverage, prompting intensified information campaigns and house-to-house vaccination efforts. Meanwhile, weeks of rotational brownouts across the Visayas finally eased as the grid returned to normal operating condition on Friday. Additional power became available following the return of key generating units in Mindanao, although NGCP warned that major plant outages could still affect the stability of the Visayas Grid.
