COMPTON BEFORE COMPTON Compton didn’t begin with the city, it began with land taken over and over again. This area was originally Tongva land before becoming part of Rancho San Pedro under the Dominguez family. For generations, Californios ran cattle across the landscape that would later become Compton. Then the United States took California. Courts, settlers, and pressure started breaking the ranchos apart. Ownership shifted piece by piece. Land passed through different hands while older histories disappeared underneath. By the time the modern city emerged, most people only saw the newest layer.
