Apollo's guidance computer ran on code that was physically woven into copper wire and magnetic rings, not stored on any disk. Engineers called it core rope memory, and it was the only way to fit a moon landing's worth of software into a machine built in the 1960s. The process started at MIT, where programmers wrote and tested the flight software on mainframes. That code was then converted into a wiring pattern, and skilled workers, mostly women with textile backgrounds, threaded copper wire through or around thousands of tiny magnetic cores by hand. A wire through the ring meant a 1, a wire around it meant a 0. One full memory unit took weeks of this work, and engineers nicknamed the workers "Little Old Ladies." The tradeoff was worth it. Because the program was physically hardwired, it could not crash, corrupt, or be erased mid flight, which mattered enormously on a mission with zero room for error. The Apollo Guidance Computer held about 72 kilobytes of this woven memory, a fraction of what a single modern photo takes up, and it still got three astronauts to the Moon and back.
