A polyrhythm occurs when two or more different rhythmic patterns are played at the same time. Instead of every part of the music following the same subdivision of a beat, each part divides the same span of time differently. For example, in a 3-against-2 polyrhythm, one part plays three evenly spaced beats while another plays two evenly spaced beats over the same amount of time. The patterns begin together, move out of alignment, and then meet again at the beginning of the next cycle. Polyrhythms can make music feel layered, energetic, and rhythmically complex even when each individual pattern is simple. They appear in many musical traditions, particularly African and Afro-diasporic music, and are also common in jazz, classical music, progressive rock, and modern electronic music. Polyrhythms have a natural mathematical structure because the different rhythms repeat according to their own subdivisions while sharing a common cycle, creating patterns based on ratios, synchronization, and repetition.
