While this particular interaction came from someone who homeschools, the attitude behind it certainly isn’t unique to homeschooling. We see the same attitudes within school communities too. And it’s only by shining a light on these attitudes, having uncomfortable conversations and challenging harmful beliefs when we see them that they become less prevalent. If we genuinely want to address male-perpetrated violence against women in Australia, we need to be willing to talk openly about the attitudes, behaviours and social norms that can contribute to it. That doesn’t mean telling boys that they are inherently bad or violent. It means giving them the tools to recognise harmful behaviour, challenge it in themselves and others, understand consent and respect, and build healthy relationships. Ignoring the problem doesn’t protect our boys. Educating them gives them the opportunity to be part of the solution. #violenceagainstwomen #whitefragility #femicide #manosphere #domesticviolence
