Matthieu Martel, a former cheerleading coach in Quebec City, Quebec, was convicted of 29 sex-related offences involving young athletes at the Le Phœnix cheerleading club, which he founded. Martel was found guilty of 13 counts of child luring, five counts involving sexual touching or invitations to sexual touching, three counts of sexual assault and multiple counts of sexual exploitation. He was also convicted of possessing and accessing child sexual abuse material discovered on his electronic devices. Evidence showed that Martel sent sexually explicit messages to teenage athletes, touched victims without their consent and exploited his position of trust and authority. Victims described an environment of grooming, isolation and coercion in which athletic opportunities were allegedly tied to accepting his sexual advances. Martel remains in custody while an evaluation is completed to determine his long-term risk to the public before sentencing.
