𝗝𝗔𝗠𝗕 𝗦𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗦𝗞𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗨𝗧𝗠𝗘 𝗘𝗫𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has constituted a committee to develop a framework for incorporating life skills and critical thinking into the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, said the initiative is aimed at aligning the UTME with the changing demands of higher education and assessing skills candidates apply in real-life situations. According to Aina, candidates are already assessed in subject areas through their O’Level examinations conducted by bodies such as WAEC and NECO. The proposed review is therefore expected to examine whether the current UTME structure remains effective in predicting candidates’ performance at the tertiary level. The committee, made up of stakeholders from universities, examination bodies, professional regulatory councils, students’ groups, secondary schools and development organisations, has been given four weeks to submit its initial recommendations. The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, represented at the event, urged the committee to develop fair, transparent and standardised assessment methods capable of measuring candidates’ analytical, logical and verbal reasoning abilities. The proposed components may be embedded within existing UTME subjects, subject to the outcome of the committee’s review and JAMB’s subsequent assessment of the recommendations. Note: The proposed changes are still under review and do not yet represent a confirmed change to the UTME format.
