SOME TOOLS JUST EARN YOUR TRUST. Over the years I’ve tried plenty of different setups, but there are certain bits of kit that have just become part of the way I work. The Hamilton 4” felt mini rollers are a perfect example. I’ve been using these for around 10 years (probably more, now I think of it) on all of my woodwork/trim. Great paint load-up, no fibre shedding, and reliable with both oil and water-based paints. I genuinely can’t remember ever having a single fibre shed with one. Which is pretty unheard of these days. And when I am so often dealing with high sheen finishes like oil based gloss especially, there is no room for error and nowhere to hide! I go through hundreds a year, as I like them fresh out of the packet. These are always on a bulk buy order 😂. For larger areas I pair them with the 4” laying-off brush. It has smooth bristles, holds its shape well and, importantly, great value for money. My main use for this is on bigger surface areas where I need to lay off quickly, but it is generally perfect size for most rails and stiles on a panelled door. Covering almost the exact width of each, means less brushing of the paint, as overworking it can ruin your results. For ceilings, it’s the 15” hammy green medium pile. More coverage with every pass, without sacrificing the smooth finish I’m looking for, especially when critical lighting is involved. When I want minimal roller stipple, I’ll reach for the 9” short pile. I’ve even used these for a cinema projection wall in the past, where getting that surface as smooth as possible was crucial. The red 9” and 15” long piles get a slightly different job from me… wallpaper paste! Their ability to hold plenty of paste helps me get a good, consistent application onto the wall. But I also use them for rough/ uneven surfaces, and they are ideal on artexed ceilings too.
