To meet the experience requirement, you generally need 4 years of directly relevant work experience gained after completing a Level 4 or higher qualification. 1.5 years must be New Zealand work experience and must be paid at the median wage. The remaining 2.5 years can come from overseas. But here’s the important part… Your overseas experience must be relevant or similar to your current job or job offer. For example, if your New Zealand role is Electrical Engineering Draftsperson, your overseas experience should be in a similar or relevant occupation. What if you don’t have complete work experience documents? In some cases, overseas experience may be supported by a Certificate of Service from your employer, including details of your employment and job duties, where tax records are not available. But remember: A Certificate of Service cannot be used to claim New Zealand work experience on its own. And self-employed work experience cannot be claimed under these requirements.
