Obviously Homelander is a fictional character and Clavicular is a real person, but there are some interesting parallels in the way both are connected to image, appearance, masculinity, and validation. Homelander’s entire identity is built around being seen as the ideal man. The perfect face, the perfect body, the perfect symbol of strength. But underneath that image is an incredibly fragile need to be admired and reassured. Clavicular’s looksmaxxing and livestreaming persona operates in a completely different context, but the obsession with appearance, physical presentation, status, and how other people perceive you creates an interesting comparison. Both also turn themselves into performances. Their appearance isn’t just appearance it becomes part of the character they project to the world. The biggest parallel to me is the contradiction between projecting extreme confidence and being deeply concerned with how you’re perceived. Homelander wants everyone to believe he’s untouchable. The more you look at him, though, the more obvious it becomes how dependent he is on other people’s validation.
