Isis was one of the greatest goddesses of ancient Egypt. She was the goddess of motherhood, magic, healing, protection, and devotion. More than simply the wife of Osiris, she became a symbol of love and loyalty, and her worship spread beyond Egypt to Greece and Rome. According to Egyptian mythology, Set murdered Osiris and cut his body into pieces. Isis refused to give up, gathered his remains, and with the help of Nephthys and Anubis briefly restored him to life through her magical powers, allowing her to conceive their son, Horus. She then hid Horus in the Nile Delta marshes to protect him from Set and raised him until he was able to reclaim his father’s throne, making her the symbol of the protective mother. The ancient Egyptians believed Isis possessed great magical power. One of her most famous myths tells how she learned Ra’s secret name, the source of his divine power, increasing her status among the gods.
