If you ever hear what sounds like a baby crying near a lake or spring in the Sierra, Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe traditions have a very clear answer about what to do. Do not go toward it. Water Babies appear near springs and lakes, including Lake Tahoe, as beautiful infants whose cries sound urgent and real. The instinct to help is exactly the point. Anyone who moves toward the sound to rescue the child gets pulled beneath the surface instead. These beings are not described as evil. They are described as powerful. And in these traditions, power demands respect, not rescue attempts from people who do not understand what they are approaching. The warning is not just about spirits. It is about water itself, about approaching something ancient and powerful like it is harmless because it looks small and helpless. Some things that appear innocent are carrying more than they show. 👇 #CaliforniaBuriedHistory #HiddenCalifornia #RealCaliforniaHistory #LakeTahoe #IndigenousStories
