๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ Speaking at the funeral of former President Festus Mogae, family friend Abel Mbaakanyi remembered Mogae as a humble, principled leader who never allowed power to change him. Mbaakanyi described the late statesman as a man who listened to everyone โ regardless of status โ saying even as President, Mogae remained approachable and willing to engage with ordinary people. โHe was never intoxicated by power,โ he said, adding that Mogae avoided praise and pomp, choosing instead a simple life guided by principle and discipline. He recalled Mogaeโs strong work ethic and impatience for delays, saying whether at the Bank of Botswana, the IMF, as Vice President or President, he believed work had to be done properly โ and on time. Above all, he said, Mogae deeply loved Botswana and its people. In a lighter moment that drew smiles from mourners, Mbaakanyi joked about the late presidentโs demanding nature, saying: โHe stole my phoneโฆ itโs dead,โ sparking laughter during an emotional farewell.
