Mbaakanyi described the late statesman as a man who listened to everyone โ€” regardless of status โ€” saying even as President, Mogae remained approachable and willing to engage with ordinary people. โ€œHe was never intoxicated by power,โ€ he said, adding that Mogae avoided praise and pomp, choosing instead a simple life guided by principle and discipline. He recalled Mogaeโ€™s strong work ethic and impatience for delays, saying whether at the Bank of Botswana, the IMF, as Vice President or President, he believed work had to be done properly โ€” and on time. Above all, he said, Mogae deeply loved Botswana and its people. In a lighter moment that drew smiles from mourners, Mbaakanyi joked about the late presidentโ€™s demanding nature, saying: โ€œHe stole my phoneโ€ฆ itโ€™s dead,โ€ sparking laughter during an emotional farewell.
