๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ Speaking in Parliament during tributes for former President Festus Mogae, opposition MP Taolo Lucas described the complex relationship opposition parties once had with Mogaeโs economic philosophy. Lucas said many in the opposition viewed Mogae as a โright-wing economistโ whose policies leaned heavily toward free-market principles, the private sector, and the wealthy โ something that made them skeptical, especially given his background with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. But despite those political and ideological differences, Lucas said Mogae earned widespread respect for the way he confronted Botswanaโs HIV/AIDS crisis head-on. โHe stood up and fought HIV,โ Lucas said โ adding that the former presidentโs leadership during one of Botswanaโs darkest public health periods changed how many people viewed him. ๐
