The Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, also known as the Semey Nuclear Test Site, was the main nuclear testing site of the Soviet Union in Kazakhstan. Between 1949 and 1989, more than 450 nuclear tests were conducted there. The tests exposed local people and the environment to radioactive contamination. Many communities in the surrounding areas were affected by the long-term consequences of nuclear testing. On August 29, 1991, Kazakhstan officially closed the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of the human and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons. #kazakhstan🇰🇿
