The backcountry is wild, unpredictable, and sometimes straight-up intimidating. Whether it’s the isolation, changing weather, or just feeling out of your comfort zone, anxiety out here is real. But it doesn’t have to stop you from having an incredible experience. Here are six tips to help manage those nerves and stay present: • Be Prepared – A lot of anxiety comes from the unknown, so control what you can. Check the forecast, pack smart, know your route, and have a solid plan. The more prepared you are, the less your mind will spiral into “what-ifs.” • Breathe & Reset – When stress kicks in, slow it down. Take deep breaths, focus on the sound of the wind, the crunch of your boots, or the rhythm of your steps. Bring yourself back to right now. • Stick to Small Goals – Instead of thinking about the entire trip, break it into manageable sections: “I just need to get to that ridge.” “Let’s take a break after this next turn.” Keeping your focus small makes the challenge feel less overwhelming. • Lean on What You Know – Trust your skills and experience. You’ve practiced, trained, and learned what to do. Instead of doubting yourself, remind yourself of how capable you are. • Talk It Out – If you’re with a group, let them know if you’re feeling uneasy. A simple, “Hey, I’m feeling a little on edge,” can open up a conversation and give you some reassurance. If you’re solo, say it out loud to yourself—sometimes hearing it helps take the power out of it. • Reframe the Fear – Instead of thinking, “What if I fail?” try, “What if I surprise myself?” A little discomfort means you’re growing. The best moments in the backcountry usually come after pushing through doubt. Anxiety is normal—it just means you care. But with time and experience, it gets easier to manage.
