Morphine is just a pain medication!💊 💊 I have heard so many family members and care givers of my patients tell me they don’t want to give morphine because they think it will kill the patient or quicken their death….. THIS 👏🏼IS 👏🏼NOT 👏🏼TRUE👏🏼 💊Morphine is an opioid pain medication that has been around forever and is used ALL the time in the hospital and hospice setting for pain management. It is not even the strongest opioid available! 💊Of course you can overdose on the medication just as you can overdose on ANY opioid medication. If you are taking Norco, Percocet, or dilaudid you are using an opioid. In the hospice setting morphine is given orally and in VERY small doses! It is also only to be given AS NEEDED! If the patient is not in pain they don’t take it. If their pain is manageable with other non-narcotic pain medication like ibuprofen or Tylenol then that’s what they should take. 💊Opioids have the side effect of drowsiness and the potential side effect of respiratory suppression when given at higher doses. If given in small doses or as ordered by your doctor, you will be just fine! 💊As a matter of fact, I have had many patients that morphine does not even work for. We end up having to give much stronger narcotic pain medications than morphine to manage their pain 💊Don’t let the myth of morphine allow your loved one to suffer for no reason! #morphine #myth #painmedications #hospice #hospicenursepractictioner #hospicenursepractitionerkrista
