💭Some thoughts on the Annual hashtag#Translator meetup in hashtag #Taipei 🇹🇼, which just wrapped up this weekend: 💭 1. ✨ I was struck by the optimism. Pretty much every session dealt with AI. So why did it seem optimistic? The sessions focused on how translators can work with AI, not AGAINST it: hashtag #Translators > AI, but Translators + AI > Any alternative 2. A number of people NOT in the hashtag #translation industry were attending, purely for informational purposes. I don’t think I’ve seen this in the US and European conferences I’ve attended. 3. Taiwan still seems very inward-focused. I was surprised how few people had online profiles on LinkedIn or Proz (and hadn’t even heard of either). There are local sites for jobs, but if you want international clients, get on LinkedIn! I actually want to record a quick summary of the main points covered, which I may do on my channel with Rita Tsai (I’m sure she got more from the Chinese lectures than I did. In fact some of my notes below were copied from her!). I’ll let you know if/when that’s posted. I could also (or instead) write up more notes on how translators can make use of Chatgpt. You can find a few of these notes included below: Some general takeaways: 🔹Don’t fear AI. Fear the clients’ lack of standards (not requiring quality work). 🔹Chatgpt has coherence, not cohesion. Always keep that in mind. 🔹You can use Chatgpt to create a glossary chart w/ 3 columns: ST, TT, Explanation. This chart exports to Excel. 🔹Translating by a human and editing by Chatgpt makes more sense than vice-versa. (look for omissions, question TT choice, etc.) 🔹Reposition yourself as a specialist in culture, language, and communication. 🔹Rather than “Editing fees”, charge “Consulting fees” 🔹Translation is not in a vacuum. This is the best time to get into translation in Taiwan (especially in Tech/business).
