Sanjaya Thaaruka Madushan Kaldurage, 26, an unemployed Sri Lankan citizen residing in Ami Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, was arrested on suspicion of residential tresspassing and theft. According to police, Kaldurage is suspected of stealing five air conditioning units, four outdoor compressor units, and one water heater—valued at a total of approximately 1.2 million yen—from a vacant house in Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, between December of last year and March of this year. During questioning, Kaldurage denied the allegations, stating, "I have absolutely no memory of this." Reports state that Kaldurage was already arrested and indicted in April of this year on separate charges of overstaying his visa. Within the jurisdiction of the Tsuchiura Police Station, 32 theft cases involving air conditioners stolen from vacant homes were reported last year, and 23 cases have occurred this year up until April. Consequently, authorities are investigating whether the suspect is linked to these additional crimes.
