Not all fluids are created equal.. here’s a quick overview of some of the most common fluids we see on the floor! And for a review on tonicity: 💧Isotonic = “Stays where I put it” → No fluid shift → Examples: NS, LR 💧Hypotonic = “Goes out of the vessel” → Fluid shifts into cells → Examples: 0.45% NaCl, D5W (in body) → Used for: dehydration, DKA 💧Hypertonic = “Enters the vessel” → Fluid pulls into intravascular space → Examples: 3% NaCl, D10W → Used for: hyponatremia, cerebral edema → Watch for: phlebitis, fluid overload
