What can Chinese science fiction tell us about the world we share? 🌍📚 Meet Lu Ban (鲁般), an award-winning Chinese science-fiction author known for works including Future Syndrome (《未来症》) and The New Elite (《新贵》). His short story White Cliff (《白色悬崖》) was shortlisted for the 2023 Hugo Award. During a China–Scotland literary exchange in Edinburgh, Lu Ban shared his views on Chinese sci-fi, cross-cultural storytelling and the importance of everyday experiences in literature. He believes Chinese science-fiction heroes can represent humanity rather than a single nation, while literature can open a window into how different cultures approach the same questions. From the disappearing tradition of writing letters to the way Scottish writers capture the wind in their stories, Lu Ban believes that literature is shaped by the places we live and the experiences we share. As he puts it, a Chinese writer may write about the rain in their city, a Scottish writer about the wind, and a writer in Cairo about the sand. Together, these stories form a picture of the world we live in. #Insightsonchina #BIBF #BookTok #scifi #sciencefiction
