Dalton Bals of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, is incarcerated at the North Bay Jail while awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in a sexual assault case involving two teenage girls. Originally facing 17 criminal counts, Bals pleaded guilty in November 2025 to sexual interference, sexual assault, and uttering threats to cause death. The sexual offences involved girls aged 12 and 13 and occurred during 2023 and 2024. Bals also admitted pushing a courthouse special constable and threatening to shoot the officer in the head while in custody. His sentencing was delayed after his original lawyer, Glenn Sandberg, died in early 2026 and Graham Clark assumed his defence. In August 2026, Bals applied to dispute and withdraw portions of the previously agreed statement of facts. This could require a Gardiner hearing, during which the Crown would have to prove the disputed facts beyond a reasonable doubt.
