Taking a short break from Watchtime pieces to show these cool new AP X Alyx collabs. Anytime there's a Royal Oak without the tapisserie pattern, you know it's special. And if you love yellow gold like me, any new yellow gold Royal Oak is also worth celebrating. Because there is no color contrast and the brushed dial looks seamless with the rest of the watch, these looks larger than normal, like a big solid chunk of delicious gold. 37mm usually feel small to me, but here it seems like a great size. Similarly, the 41mm chronograph feels larger than other versions. The white gold Offshore was especially cool, as the curved rehaut looks so cool with the minimal dial. The white metal looks industrial and sleek, but unfortunately it felt too big and heavy for my wrist. When the collab was announced, most people were unsure about the 1017 ALYX 9SM logo on the dial, especially if you're not a fan of the brand. But we quickly realized it's a "ghost" logo, that it's barely visible at many angles. One interesting detail about that area is how the rehaut and the brushed dial reflect overhead light and they show up as "light whiskers". So if you don't like the logo, you might not notice it anyway. I have also heard people disliking how the subdial markings have been removed from the 41mm chronograph so the utility has been lost. Well once you remember what the markings should be, it's not that hard. Also, the MB&F x Moser LM101 had the same thing for its subdials and people didn't seem to mind. Both these watches are more like art or concept pieces. I love how AP continues to do high-end traditional complications but also do playful and cultural pieces like this. Streetwear and pop culture are symbolic of our times and culture.
