Replying to @cbh1000 I want to use this comment as a means to demonstrate how not to engage with others about book opinions— we can use this platform as a way to understand each other better, to build and foster connections and to critically engage with literature (even books that aren’t “heavy” or “prolific” in a general sense) — also, we need to remember people have different expectations and desires when it comes to reading, and those things can differ from person to person. Just because Ready Player One went beyond my expectations for it and provided what I wanted (entertainment, a good story, a novel concept and excellent pacing) doesn’t mean it will be the same for others, and that’s okay! Rather than write someone off for their opinions, it’s so much better to have a conversation and try to understand what made their experience of the same book different than yours. There are many booktokers on here who love books I didn’t love, but if I wrote off all of their future recommendations for that reason alone, I would be doing myself a disservice. Part of the fun of reading is community— discussing both the words on the page and how we interpreted them based on our own life experiences and expectations. As a community, I really think we can do better than writing people off without even asking a question about their rating of a book 😭 Also— let’s not fall into the trap of thinking all 5 ⭐️ books have to be the same— if that’s how you rank your books that’s fine, but some people (like me) rank a books out of 5 on its own merit, not in comparison to every other book I’ve read. If i did that, I would probably only be able to rank literary fiction books as 5 ⭐️ because they’re usually the most emotionally compelling for me— but those are not the only good books out there!! What do you think? #booktok #unpopularbookopinions #criticism #bookrecommendations #bookdiscourse
