Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia is a disorder in which the volume control on sensory processing has been turned up. This affects not only pain sensation but also sensations of light, noises, and odours. This type of pain is termed nociplastic pain and is seen in other conditions such as tension-type headaches and IBS. It differs from nociceptive pain, which occurs because of tissue damage, or neuropathic pain, which occurs due to nerve damage. Nociplastic pain occurs when the central nervous system, the spinal cord and the brain increase their sensitivity to the signals they receive, amplifying sensory signals. This process will turn mild pressure or heat on the skin into a pain signal. The involvement of the central nervous system also causes other somatic symptoms, such as fatigue, memory problems, sleep disturbances, and mood disturbances. #fibromyalgia #fibro #pain #chronicpain #chronicillness
