In an effort to create more engaging projects for my art 1 students in a budget friendly manner - I was inspired to introduce a toilet paper sculpture project. I've seen quite a few art teachers on TikTok complete similar projects with great success and I liked the idea of sculpting on a budget. students tend to work really well with their hands in a 3D way because of how we naturally interact with the world. Proposing them to use something mundane like toilet paper to form sculptures was a creative feat. The balance of water to toilet paper ratio. Preventing mold. When and how much joint compound to add. How to maintain structural integrity with something that can squish or tear so easily. Forcing them to think outside of the box, or roll, for creating strong foundations. Then, the chemistry of paint mixing, layering, correct brushes to use, etc. It teaches students problems solving in a creative way. All materials have unique characteristics; artistically, physically, scientifically, that we can come to understand in a different way when we manipulate the materials in a new manner.
