Did Africans resist the transatlantic slave trade? Yes—and African resistance is part of Black American history. Our ancestors included Africans victimized by the Atlantic slave trade, while African rulers, merchants, captives, ordinary communities and resisters were never one historical actor. Some powerful interests participated in human trafficking. Other Africans were captured, enslaved, escaped, revolted and fought slave raiders and traffickers on African soil. So “Africans sold Africans” doesn’t explain the history. The better questions are: Which Africans held power? Who was victimized? Who profited? And who resisted? Africa was never one side of the transatlantic slave trade. #AfricanResistance #TransatlanticSlaveTrade #BlackAmericanHistory #AuthenticBlackAmerican #GlobalBlackUnity
