In 2012, University of South Florida researchers used ground-penetrating radar finding 55 graves in area behind school when state had only acknowledged 31 burials. Boys died from beatings, were buried secretly, and families were never told. Some graves hold multiple bodies with many victims being Black children buried in segregated graves. The state of Florida knew from multiple decades of investigations documenting abuse and former students testifying about beatings. But the school stayed open until 2011.
