Mello, whose real name is Mihael Keehl, is one of the main successors to L in Death Note. He grew up at Wammy’s House, an orphanage for gifted children, alongside Near, who was his main rival. Mello is extremely intelligent, ambitious, emotional, and willing to take much greater risks than Near to solve the Kira case. After L’s death, Mello leaves Wammy’s House because he doesn’t want to simply compete with Near for the position of L’s successor. He becomes involved with the mafia and uses more dangerous methods to investigate Kira, eventually playing an important role in helping bring the case toward its conclusion.
