Azula has brought so, so much joy not only into our lives but also into Harvey’s life. She came during a time when we needed her most, right around when Harvey first got diagnosed with cancer. the first few weeks with her were wild. And I had moments of being like.. why did we do this… but I now know she was totally meant to be ours. I always worried I’d never connect with a dog again in the way I do Harvey. Azula is the first dog (hopefully of many) that proved me wrong. She is so, so special. She reminds me everyday how glad I am I gave the scared dog a chance. She is not that dog she was in the shelter at all. She is the reason I encourage people to meet the scared dog or the dogs barking at you when you walk by. Dogs are so much more than their kennel presence. Anytime it’s my dog’s gotcha day I try to use it as a way to remind people how many dogs in shelters need our help. Please do not let the internet convince you that shelter dogs are less than in any way. It’s a false narrative many people spread. you it’s a cliche, but it’s true: you can find such a wide variety of dogs in shelters. I can’t wait for many, many more years with Azula. She makes me laugh every single day. She proves bully breed and rescue stereotypes wrong every single day.
