Perpetual liver transplantation is impossible because regenerating liver cells are biologically limited in how many times they can divide. When a liver is transplanted, its cells must rapidly multiply to restore the organ's full size, but each cycle of division shortens their protective chromosomal caps, known as telomeres. At the same time, continuous forced replication causes genetic copy errors to accumulate, which can bypass the tissue's natural defenses and lead to tumor growth. Even if the liver avoids cancer, the progressively shortening telomeres will eventually trigger cellular senescence: a state where the cells become permanently exhausted, stop dividing entirely, and lose their critical ability to filter toxins and sustain the body.
