Drivers couldn't believe what they were seeing. A bear climbed to the top of a utility pole and walked along power lines beside a New Mexico highway before falling. Travelers called 911, but dispatchers told them to leave the bear alone because tranquilizing it could cause it to fall. Wildlife officials were notified as crews responded. The New Mexico Department of Wildlife later confirmed the bear died after sustaining fatal injuries before responders arrived. The agency said people stopping to film and take photos may have kept the bear from climbing down.
