You gotta have the CLANK. In my opinion, the "Clank" is the most crucial component of the EVH rhythm tone. What I mean is, the way the notes have a metallic bite, as if they have a muscular weight to them. The average overdrive tone tends to have a far too fuzzy bottom end, which is exactly what you DON'T want when playing Van Halen songs. In my experience, the best way to remove this fuzzy bottom end is to EQ it out before the amp. On all my Van Halen AmpliTube presets, I add a 10 band EQ and tweak the faders to sap selected bass frequencies, which enables more bite on each note. The best way to dial it in with an amp modeller like AmpliTube is to actually record the performance first in your DAW, and then tweak during playback. This method enables me to adjust all tones until they tickle the ear in just the right way. Far easier than play, adjust, play, adjust etc. I have a whole video on YouTube devoted to this very topic. Just search TomShreds Brown Sound. Get this AmpliTube preset (and many many more) in my Shred Like Ed course (link in bio). #vanhalen #EVH #EddieVanHalen #BrownSound #Ain'tTalkinBoutLove
