What is radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and how is it used to treat lower back pain? Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure which can be used to relieve chronic lower back pain. It involves using a specialized needle to deliver heat energy to specific nerves in the affected area that are responsible for transmitting pain signals to the brain. The heat energy generated by radiofrequency waves damages the nerve fibers, thus reducing or eliminating the transmission of pain signals. During the procedure, local anesthesia is used to numb the area around the affected nerves. The RFA needle is then inserted through the skin and guided to the target nerve under fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray). Once the needle is in position, a small electric current is used to confirm the correct placement. Then, the heat energy is delivered through the needle for a short period of time, usually around 90 seconds. #radiofrequencyablation #painmanagement #lowerbackpain #lowerbackpainrelief #lowerbackpaintreatment #arthritis #arthritisrelief
