Phoenix do Mar and I departed Neah Bay, Washington, on the west coast of the United States. Marking the start of our attempt to sail around the world nonstop. An impossible feat. Not impossible because it has never been done before. It has. But impossible for someone like me. The tire guy. The song you are hearing is Silver Ships of Andilar. It’s a story about people who built fine ships and set them toward a distant place, chasing something great. Chasing dreams. The voyage takes everything from them. In the end, there is nothing left. No victory. No glorious arrival. And still, after being deemed impossible, the final message is not a warning to stay ashore. But a call to build more ships. When I started this journey, I knew the odds were never going to be good. I knew I could give everything I had to this and still come up short. I knew there might be a point where the refit, the ocean, my own ability, or simple chance decided the outcome for me. I know that today, too. Perhaps now more then ever. I am not leaving because I whole heartedly believe I will succeed in realizing this dream. I am leaving because I have to try. I do not believe we are obligated to accomplish our dreams. But I do think we owe them an honest attempt. Because one day the opportunity disappears. One day we get too old, too comfortable, too afraid, too busy, or simply run out of days. So this is it. The boat is ready. I am as ready as I know how to be. And as you read this, I am watching the shore line disappear from behind me. I have no idea what the next months will ask of me. I do not know how this story ends. But I built my ship. And today, I sail it.
