Each winter, thousands of koholā (humpback whales) return to Hawai‘i’s warm waters after traveling roughly 3,000 miles from northern feeding grounds. In Hawaiian mo‘olelo (stories), koholā are recognized as ʻaumākua (ancestors) or family guardians, carrying deep cultural meaning. Their return is one of the most exciting aspects of the winter months and something that both locals and visitors alike look forward to. They can be seen throughout the islands from roughly December to April. Giving these gentle giants space of at least 100 yards keeps them, and you, safe during their time here. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy.
