On the evening of February 19, 1994, Gloria Ramirez, a 31 year old woman with late stage cervical cancer, was brought by paramedics to Riverside General Hospital in Riverside, California, at about 8:15 pm. Nurse Susan Kane drew her blood, noticed an ammonia like smell from the syringe and fainted. Dr. Julie Gorchynski saw manila colored particles in the blood and collapsed next, followed by respiratory therapist Maureen Welch. In total 23 people became ill and several were hospitalized, with Gorchynski spending two weeks in intensive care. Ramirez was pronounced dead at 8:50 pm from an irregular heartbeat brought on by kidney failure from her cancer. State health investigators concluded it was most likely mass hysteria, while scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, led by Patrick Grant, proposed that she had been using DMSO, a solvent sold as a home pain remedy, which converted into toxic dimethyl sulfate in the emergency room. Neither explanation has ever been proven. Second track composed by Bert Cole (bitbybitsound.com)
