A humanoid robot lying on a table can still tell you a lot about how hard human-like motion is. This Vitarobotics bionic humanoid is moving its legs through repeated lifts, bends and extensions while the upper body stays supported. You can see the exposed electronics around the torso while the human-shaped legs move through a wide range of motion. For humanoid robotics, this kind of lower-body testing helps engineers study joint coordination, actuator control, range of motion and how the hip, knee and ankle need to work together before full-body walking is added. The part I kept watching is the hip-to-knee motion. Even a simple leg raise needs several joints to stay coordinated through the full movement. Human-like appearance gets attention, but the mechanics underneath still decide how the robot moves.
