SEVASTOPOL 1942 The Siege of Sevastopol was one of the fiercest battles on the Eastern Front during World War II. In June 1942, German forces launched a major offensive against Soviet defenses, deploying massive artillery, including the 80 cm Schwerer Gustav railway gun, one of the largest artillery weapons ever built. The gun fired enormous shells against heavily fortified Soviet positions, while German aircraft and conventional artillery supported the assault.
